Weight Loss - Tirzepatide

Food

Dear Patient - Please follow guidelines below while on Tirzepatide. Remember medication is only a small part of weight loss; diet and exercise is the most essential part of your weight loss journey.

Diet should include at least 8 (8 oz) glasses of water. Remember Tea, Soda, Lemonade, etc is liquid but it is not water. Insufficient amount of water intake while on Tirzepatide can cause kidney damage that can be permanent.

Count and record your calorie intake. Women stay under 1500 calories per day - 5 small meals at 300 calories each can be more beneficial than eating one large meal per day.

Men try to stay under 1800 calories per day  - 360 calories per meal 5 x day.

While on Tirzepatide the risk of pancreatitis is generally low but possible. To help minimize this risk, it's advisable to be mindful of your diet.

Here are food groups to generally avoid or limit while on Tirzepatide, especially to support pancreatic health and reduce discomfort:

  • High-Fat Foods: These can be difficult and slow to digest, potentially worsening gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and stomach discomfort. They can also strain the pancreas.
  • Examples: Fried foods (french fries, fried chicken, mozzarella sticks), fast foods (burgers, pizza), high-fat dairy products (butter, ice cream, full-fat cheese, cream sauces), high-fat cuts of meat (bacon, sausage, dark poultry meat with skin), processed and cured meats, rich desserts, chocolate, coconut, avocado (in large amounts).
  • Refined Carbohydrates and Added Sugars: These can cause rapid blood sugar spikes, which can interfere with how Tirzepatide works and may put more strain on the body.
  • Examples: Candy, cookies, cakes, pastries, white bread, white rice, regular pasta, sugary cereals, soda, juice, sweetened beverages.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can increase the risk of pancreatitis and affect blood glucose levels, especially for individuals with diabetes. It's generally recommended to limit or avoid alcohol while on Tirzepatide.
  • Highly Processed Foods: These often contain unhealthy fats, excessive sugar, and sodium, which can contribute to digestive issues and overall health problems.
  • Carbonated Beverages: Soda and other carbonated drinks can cause bloating and gas, which can worsen some of Tirzepatide's side effects.
  • Very Sweet or Spicy Foods: If you experience nausea or other gastrointestinal issues, bland foods are often better tolerated, and very sweet or spicy foods can aggravate symptoms.

If you experience severe abdominal pain spreading to your back, nausea, and vomiting while on Tirzepatide, seek emergency medical help immediately, as these could be signs of pancreatitis.

Resistance Training

Exercise at least 35-50 minutes 3-4 x week. Tirzepatide causes muscle loss. To minimize this side effect of medication you must do resistance training: This helps stimulate muscle growth and maintenance. Below are some exercise programs links that can be helpful.
